About Us

The CSEM – Centro Scalabriniano de Estudos Migratórios is a philanthropic institution dedicated to researching, studying and publicizing information on human mobility. CSEM’s activities regard the well being of migrants and refugees based on the promotion of their organizations, education and progress.

The Center also develops research and analysis and promotes events and studies on the migration field in partnership with universities and other institutions. Our knowledge base is constantly updated and includes a library and a vast collection of specialized bibliography.

CSEM is a Congregational institution and part of the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo – Scalabrinian. This congregation was founded by John Baptist Scalabrini on October 25th, 1895. The Congregation co-founders are Mother Assunta Marchetti and Father Joseph Marchetti and its patron is St. Charles Borromeo. The activities began in 1988. Its goals are:

  • To offer a knowledge base on human mobility as a source for socio-pastoral activity towards migrant people and also as a contribution to the defense and promotion of the human rights of migrants and refugees looking for the transformation of social reality;
  • To incite the public opinion about migration reality through the center's research, surveys, analysis, reflections and publications on human mobility and related issues;
  • To develop social, cultural and religious projects focused on counseling, assistance and human promotion of migrants and refugees;
  • To build up a specialized library and make it available for public research and information;
  • To articulate with members of CEMIS network, universities, governmental and nongovernmental organizations on behalf of the human mobility environment.
