HUNDREDS of thousands more female immigrants arrived in Britain over the past 10 years than was believed – and have created a mini baby boom.

The startling findings show that the number was underestimated by 361,000.

Most of these women are in their prime child-bearing years, aged 20 to 44.

More than a quarter of all births in the UK are now to women who were not born here, boosting the number of children aged 0-8 years by nearly 300,000 since the last census in 2001.

Polish women have taken over from Pakistanis as the single largest group of foreign-born mothers in 2010 and 2011, accounting for more than one in 10 births within this group.

This week’s findings challenge data released by the Office for National Statistics in July, which showed net migration to England and Wales increased the population by more than 2.1 million.

The latest study, by the Financial Times, also says the ONS overestimated the number of male immigrants by 94,000.
The UK’s population is projected to surge from 62.3 million last year to 70 million by 2027, with two thirds of the rise
attributed to immigration.

But economists and population analysts argue that immigrants having babies is positive for the UK.

British-born women are having too few children – an average of 1.9 each – to be able to pay for the growing elderly population in years to come. A rate of 2.1 is thought necessary.

When foreign-born mothers are included, the rate goes up to 2.0.

Gordon Sharp, head of the Continuous Mortality Investigations unit, an actuarial body, said it meant that the cost of supporting the nation’s growing elderly population in 30 years would be spread among more workers.
